These Foods Fight Cancer

potent weapons against cancer you can find in your grocery store.

Here are the six of the most potent weapons against cancer you can find in your grocery store. These are broccoli, berries, tomatoes, walnuts, garlic and beans. Make sure they are organic so you do not eat pesticide or GMO (genetically modified organisms).

Beans

Researchers at Michigan State University who did a study on rats found out that black and navy beans significantly reduced colon cancer. Dry beans increase levels of the fatty acid butyrate, which has protective effects against cancer growth. However, the concentration of acid butyrate has to be high to have an effect. Beans are also effective in preventing breast cancer in rats. Make sure you buy organic beans, as about 90% of beans sold in the U.S. are genetically modified. Many corporate health magazines, such as Health.com advise adding a serving of beans from a can. You should avoid canned food. Most cans are lined with plastic and contain bisphenol (BPA) that is highly harmful.

Berries

Berries are the popular ingredient of Slavic cuisine. Slavs even make their wines from berries. In the USA, you can buy berry and fruit wines in Polish stores. All berries contain cancer-fighting phytonutrients. Phytochemicals called anthocyanins, slow down the growth of premalignant cells. Phytochemicals are found in high concentrations in black raspberries. Berries fight colon, oral and skin cancers.

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, cabbage or kale. All of them contain cancer-fighting properties. However, broccoli contains the largest amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body’s protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals. Broccoli fights a wide range of cancers, breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach and bladder.

Garlic

In Slavic folklore, garlic protects one from vampires. Garlic is also excellent cancer–fighter. Garlic contains phytochemicals that halt the formation of nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are carcinogens formed in the stomach. Nitrosamines are formed when we eat processed food that contains nitrates, a common food preservative. One more reason we should prepare our own food from scratch. The best way to get beneficial effects of garlic is to eat it raw and crushed. Crushing helps release beneficial enzymes. Garlic fights breast, colon, esophageal and stomach cancers.

Tomatoes

Many people love tomatoes and whole national traditions were built around tomatoes, such as Italian cuisine. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red color. Lycophene stops the growth of endometrial cancer cells. Which is great news as endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Uterine cancer occurs in women of reproductive age and older. About one-quarter of cases occur before menopause, but the disease is most often diagnosed in women in their 50s or 60s. The bad news is that tomatoes that are sold in supermarkets are picked up green, ripened with ethanol and are bad for your health. So if you have a yard, grow your own tomatoes. Always eat tomatoes that are dark red, ripe and juicy. Organic, ripe tomatoes help fight endometrial, lung, prostate and stomach cancers.

Walnuts

Never buy shelled nuts.

Walnuts are the most studied in cancer research so we cannot jump to conclusion that only walnuts have cancer-fighting properties. Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, one of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which can make walnuts more susceptible to becoming rancid. That’s why you should never buy walnuts without shells. All nuts should be bought in shells. Walnuts contain phytosterols that block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, possibly slowing the cancerous cell’s growth. Walnuts help fight breast and prostate cancer. You should eat a few walnuts daily.
